Explorer
Built for the real off-road adventurer
The Explorer tier is for self-drive travelers who want to leave the graded roads behind. These vehicles carry genuine off-road equipment and are matched with routes that demand real 4x4 capability — remote tracks, river crossings, and sand. Because conditions are serious, every Explorer driver completes a short skills assessment before handover. This is the tier for travelers who already know their way around a 4x4, or want to prove they're ready to.
What comes with an Explorer vehicle
Every Explorer rental is fitted with the gear needed to handle genuine off-road terrain safely and self-sufficiently. This is standard equipment on every booking in this tier — nothing to source yourself.
Sand plates — recover traction fast when wheels dig into soft sand.
Snorkel — raises the air intake for deep water crossings and dusty tracks.
Winch — self-recovery when a vehicle is stuck with nothing nearby to help.
High-lift jack — lifts the vehicle clear for tyre changes and recovery on uneven ground.
Spotlights — long-range lighting for safe night driving on unlit routes.
Reinforced recovery points and tow strap — rated gear for safe vehicle-to-vehicle recovery.
Every Explorer driver is tested before departure
Explorer vehicles go to places where mistakes are costly. Before any handover, we run a short practical assessment covering vehicle controls, low-range gearing, basic recovery technique, and judgment on rough terrain. This isn't about catching you out — it's about making sure you and the vehicle come back in one piece.
The assessment takes place at pickup, typically 30–45 minutes, and is included in your booking at no extra cost. If you're not yet confident off-road, our team can recommend a Camper or Touring vehicle instead, or arrange a guided introduction before stepping up to Explorer.
Explorer tier: common questions
Do I need previous off-road experience to book an Explorer vehicle?
Some experience helps, but it's not required. The pre-departure assessment is designed to check your current skill level and give you guidance on the spot. If you're not ready, we'll recommend a better-suited tier or arrange guided support. What happens if I don't pass the driver assessment?
We'll talk through what happened and offer options — a short coaching session, a switch to our Camper or Touring tier, or a guided departure with one of our drivers. How long does the assessment take and does it cost extra?
It's included in your booking and usually takes 30–45 minutes at vehicle pickup. What vehicles are used in the Explorer tier?
Explorer vehicles are 4x4s fitted with sand plates, snorkel, winch, high-lift jack, spotlights, and reinforced recovery points — ready for serious off-road routes. Can I bring my own off-road gear instead of using what's fitted?
The fitted equipment is tested and matched to the vehicle, so we ask that you use what's provided. If you have a specific need, mention it when booking and we'll see what we can arrange.
